Cody Tempest has been named the 2026 Teacher of the Year for Florida Scholars Academy (FSA) for his dedication and passion for helping at-risk youth.
The FSA, which is operated by Florida Virtual School, serves students in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice’s (DJJ) residential commitment program.
Tempest teaches at the Alachua Academy in Gainesville. The academy is one of 42 DJJ residential commitment programs across the state.
“Cody is so deserving of this honor as he is truly the embodiment of our FSA commitment, which is to provide students with a high-quality education that can change the trajectory of their lives,” said Julian Cazañas, superintendent of Florida Scholars Academy. “He is a true leader in his field and is always willing to go the extra mile for his teammates by assisting at various facilities across the state.”
Before joining the FLVS team as a Florida Scholars Academy teacher, Tempest spent almost six years teaching math in the Union County School District in Lake Butler. He also has four years of experience as a music teacher and band director. Now, in his current role, his main focus is ensuring FSA students receive a high-quality education so they earn their high school diploma, GED, an industry-recognized credential, or pursue postsecondary education.
“As a teacher for Florida Scholars Academy, I have the opportunity to help our students discover their full potential and lead them to become productive members of society,” said Tempest. “There are so many incredible teachers who work alongside me every day doing this work, and it’s an honor to be recognized in this way.”
Tempest has a master's degree in Education Administration from the University of West Florida and a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Florida.
